Believe it or not, you can make use of a few tips in order to make yourself avoid certain dangers. Self defense can be best started when you are taking preventive measures. Here are a few ways for you to avoid becoming a victim of crime.

Note that there are verbal and non verbal cues that will determine if you are a vulnerable target or not. You have to become aware of your actions. Make sure that you are not committing actions that will make you a target.

Know which places are considered high crime areas. You need to be more careful in such places. However, this does not mean that you will feel comfortable when you are in a place that is not frequented by crimes. Actually, no place is really safe.

If possible, you have to dress down. Avoid flaunting expensive jewelry. Even using high-end phones and other expensive gadgets should be avoided. The things that you will use need to be appropriate to the area that you will visit. You will be a very easy target to choose by the criminal elements.

If you have your car with you, make sure that you choose correctly where you will park. Of course, you should also avoid using expensive cars.

You also have to play your role in terms of noticing your surroundings. You have to be aware of people who are near you or are around you. Robbers would plan to catch their victims by surprise. You would not want to be sneaked up on and so, you have to be wary of the people that you are with and be aware of where you are.

If you are walking out alone, you have to look confident. Go directly to where you are heading to. Keep moving and do not let distractions slow you down. You have to get out of there as soon as possible without compromising your safety.

As parents would often remind their children, never talk to strangers. You have to be aware of people who would seem to need your help. This can be a dilemma for many people. You can be torn between lending a helping hand and keeping away from any potential trouble. In order to address this, you have to be able to differentiate between a person needing real help and a person who is just there to bate you.

As much as possible, avoid going to areas where you are most vulnerable. Walking in the middle of the night on a dark alley will make you more likely to be a victim. If you want to maximize your safety, you should try to use daylight to your advantage.

Make sure that you are completely sober. When you have to be alone when going home, you have to keep a clear mind. Furthermore, you might be more vulnerable to robbery. Criminal elements know that any drunken person might be easier to rob or victimize as he or she may offer the least resistance.
